Yoga in
the Community's Current Projects
Detour House: Rehabilitation for young women
with alcohol / drug dependency. We offer a once a week yoga
/ relaxation class to residents at Detour House on a
voluntary basis. After six months the coordinators were so
happy with the program they have began searching for grant
funding to expand the program. There is also opportunity
through Detour House to expand into a program for at risk
teenagers. The classes focus on anxiety management,
building self esteem and social reintegration.
Yoga for Autistic Adults: at
Samadhi Yoga in Newtown we run a weekly class for autistic
adults through the Autism Association. The classes are a
huge success and focus on aspects of the practice that
encourage improvement in motor skills, co-ordination,
re-patterning of the breath to manage anxiety. Nicky West
(founder of the Jammy Gallery in Redfern) is the teacher
and co-coordinator of this program.
Community $5 Yoga Classes: For
the past twelve months, Samadhi Yoga’s $5 community
classes have increased from being 5 times a week to 15
times a week due to overwhelming demand. These classes
provide an opportunity for low income earners, students and
the long term unemployed to experience the benefits of yoga
and are extremely popular with these groups.
Yoga at Lidcome Juvenile Justice
Centre: Recent graduates from the Samadhi
Yoga teacher training have started a pilot project with a
group of at-risk teenagers in this Juvenile Justice Centre,
supported by their team co-coordinator.
We have plans for many more projects which will
be dependant on funding and volunteer support. Watch this
space for updates!
